Frogs Of The Greater Brisbane Region
Brisbane is a city located in Queensland, Australia with an area of 1220 square kilometres and a population of over 1 million. The climate is mainly subtropical with areas of rainforest, dry eucalypt forest, woodlands and some coastal heath. Mangroves and wetland areas surround the body of water known as Moreton Bay.
The area known as the Brisbane Region is usually regarded as the Brisbane Metropolitan Area plus the surrounding 60 - 100 kilometres.
Of the more than 200 species of frogs living in Australia approximately 114 species live in Queensland, and about 35 species of frogs in the Brisbane region, some of these are quite common, while some of them are feared extinct.
Whilst the cane toad is not native to Australia, it has been included due to its relative abundance and the need for public awareness of the correct identification of this pest, to assist in its removal.

Glass frog (or Glassfrogs) is the common/popular name for the frogs of the amphibian family Centrolenidae (order Anura). While the general background coloration of most glassfrogs is primarily lime green; the ventral skin of some members of this family is transparent (species of the genus Hyalinobatrachium). The internal viscera, including the heart, liver, and digestive tract can be seen due to the translucency of the ventral skin. This particular characteristic is the origin of their common name (Glass Frogs or Glassfrogs).

Амфибии – очень интересная и чрезвычайно разнообразная группа животных, обладающая многими необычными приспособлениями к окружающей среде. Эти древние существа появились на Земле примерно 360 миллионов лет назад. Именно они были пионерами при освоении позвоночными суши, они далекие предки всех населяющих ныне нашу планету рептилий, птиц и млекопитающих. Их можно обнаружить на всех континентах, кроме Антарктиды, и на большинстве крупных океанических островов: в джунглях, в болотах, в культурных ландшафтах и в пустынях. В умеренном климате они впадают в зимнее оцепенение, в жарких пустынях они могут проводить жаркое время суток или даже целые сезоны, зарывшись в землю.
Существуют три группы амфибий: лягушки и жабы (Бесхвостые), саламандры и тритоны (Хвостатые) и червяги (Безногие). Название амфибий (amphi - двойной, bios - жизнь) отражает способность этих животных жить как в воде, так и на суше. Они лишены чешуи, перьев или волос, у них влажная кожа. А некоторые саламандры полностью утратили легкие, и газообмен у них происходит исключительно через кожу. Они экзотермны - температура их тела зависит от температуры окружающей среды.
За миллионы лет существования амфибии стали важным звеном в сложнейшей системе природных связей. Поедая несметное количество беспозвоночных (в том числе столь беспокоящих человека комаров, мошек и саранчу), они сами становятся основной добычей для многих видов змей, птиц и зверей. Например, в некоторых лесах Северной Америки амфибии по совокупной биомассе превышают все местные виды птиц и млекопитающих, вместе взятых. Исчезновение амфибий неизбежно повлечет вымирание огромного числа других видов животных.
Амфибии улучшают жизнь некоторых людей, хотя многие могут и не догадываться об этом. Они являются источниками биомедицинских препаратов, включая составы, из которых выделяются обезболивающие, антибиотики, стимуляторы для жертв сердечных приступов и лекарства от таких заболеваний, как депрессия, паралич, припадки, болезнь Альцгеймера и рак. Австралийская красноглазая литория (Litoria chloris) и родственные ей виды дают нам состав, способный предотвратить ВИЧ-инфекцию, вызывающую СПИД.
Между тем, ученые бьют тревогу: амфибиям грозит серьезная опасность.
